I Vant to Suck Your Blood!

Hello, Seniors.

Consider the reading you've done so far of Bram Stoker's Dracula. It may be especially important to make a distinction between Dracula and other vampire novels you've read. Remember: Dracula is the vampire who does not sparkle.

How does Bram Stoker convey mood and tone in the first five chapters? (Hint: This will probably require at least two paragraphs, and I need to know you understand the difference between these two terms!)

Before you write, think about the difference between mood and tone (one is the attitude an author conveys about a subject, the other is the general feeling you get from reading the story. For instance, how does it make you feel when you read about a foggy meadow and know Dracula lurks as the fog itself?! Whew! I know that gives me goosebumps!).

Be sure to find one example of each to show me that you are truly a Dracula expert! (Another Hint: one of these can be proven in adjectives and phrases, the other can be shown in descriptions or scenes! Don't think too hard. You need not use exact quotes, but make sure other people understand what you are saying, so be clear!)

  1. When I read about a foggy meadow and know that Dracula lurks as the fog itself, it makes me jumpy and nervous. The tone makes the reader want to read faster so that you know what happens. The "I want to suck your blood" gives the ready goosebumps already. Bram Stoker converys tone so the reader feels the "Dracula" part of the story. The writer's tone is very mysterious by not allowing the reader guess what happens until the end when it is revealed.

  2. The mood of the novel so far is creepy and gothic. It's always set at night when the moon is out, and there's a huge castle, and it's all supernatural and stuff. The fog really helps to give it that creepy feel. Why is Dracula such a creeper?

The tone is how Bram Stoker reveals his thoughts about Dracula. I'm guessing that since he had a character call him "Satan" and other foul terms, he's not Dracula's biggest fan. He's probably religious and stuff, and wants to show that good vanquishes evil.

  3. Ditto to Abby. Does that count as two paragraphs?

The tone seems to suggest that we should learn something from this story. It isn't just being written for fun and games, there's a message behind Stoker's tale.

The mood is CREEEEEEPPPPYYYYYY! I didn't like fog to begin with, but now I'm really going to have to avoid it at all costs.

  5. My mom said I can't read this stuff. It's too scary and implies things she doesn't want me to be subjected too. I guess like Alex and Abby said the tone of Dracula is too dark for my mother to approve of. She's soo boring. Dracula is like the first Edward... only meaner... I mean they're probably related...right? If this were true the eery mood of the story changes dramatically... Perhaps more people would fall in love with him if they considered this. I wonder how the author would change the mood through descriptors to over compensate? Pretty sure his TONE would be even more disapproving to my mom! Boo.

  6. I love Dracula, but I think I like the movies better then the book :)

The mood of the book is gothic and scary. By having the setting set at night, it brings in the fear of the unknown that lurks in the shadows!

The tone of the book is that there is a message to learn from Dracula; it's not just a hot vampire like Edward. It's someone who is serious!

  7. I love Dracula! I am a big horror fan and the creepier the mood of the story the better tone i get from it. I think that the fog is super creeepppyyy, but I love it! The element of suspense is a big issue for me. if i read something and it is meant to have a dark tone, I want to feel it. I want to read it until I am finished with the whole book!!! The mood is Gothic and that really appeals to me. The tone is a mysterious one because the writer does keep the reader guessing.

I do enjoy reading Vampire novels and I especially enjoy when the Vampire is the creepiest they can be!!! :)

  8. I imagine Dracula to be creepy and full of blood. This is the mood. The tone is how Stoker conveys this mood through his use of language.

  9. The legend of Dracula is the only vampire story that attracts my interest because it's the original. I'm really indifferent about vampire novels because they to fake and I prefer realistic literature.
